OBITUARY

CHARLES J. CULLISON

Old Grinnell residents will be grieved to learn of the death at Portland, Ore., of Charles J. Cullison, univerally known in this vicinity as "K.Y. Cully, my mother's only joy." "Cully" was born on a farm west of Grinnell, his parents later moving into town, living where the Parker school now stands. He attended school here for a short time and then took up railroading, working first as brakeman and then as conductor on the old Iowa Central. At the age of 23 he married a Grinnell girl, Miss Jennie Farr, and in a short time left for the West to grow up with the country. His winning personality won him many fast friends in the vicinity who will regret to hear of his death. Below is a clipping from a Portland paper forwarded to The Herald:

"Funeral services for Charles J. Cullison, who died unexpectedly on Wednesday, will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Finley chapel. The body will be taken to Newberg for interment in the family plot, where special services are to be held Sunday afternoon.

"Charley Cullison had been engaged in the real estate business in Portland for 20 years and was widely known throughout this city and the Pacific Northwest.

"A huge man, weighing 280 pounds, Mr. Cullison was the soul of good humor, and was hailed everywhere as 'Charley.' It is said of him that his every business deal brought him lasting friendships.

"Mr. Cullison was born in Grinnell, Iowa, March 18, 1865, where he spent his early youth and where he was wedded 30 years ago, to Jennie Elizabeth Farr.

"Death was due to a heart attack at his office on Wednesday afternoon. An autopsy performed by the coroner disclosed a blood clot which had brought on the attack. At the time of his death Mr. Cullison was alone, and his body was discovered some time later.

"He is survived by his widow, who resides at their ranch home near Oregon City; by his daughter, Mrs. Marion Sherwood, of Portland, and his son Floyd Cullison, who is in service with the navy, having enlisted at the outbreak of the war."
