SERVICES HELD FOR DANIEL GNAU

Funeral services for Daniel T. Gnau Jr., 64, of Phoenix, Ariz., and the Chester community, were held Wednesday, August 9, at the Smith Funeral Home with Allyson and Peter Sawtell, co-pastors of the Newburg-Chester Parish of the U.C.C. Congregational church officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Kathleen Heffner and pallbearers were Ronald Baltisberger, Wilbur Baltisberger, John Blazek, Dale Clark, Clinton Smith and Fred Weaver Sr. Burial was in the Chester cemetery.

Mr. Gnau, the son of Daniel Theodore and Sophia Theresa Oser Gnau, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 9, 1914. As a young man, he and his family moved to Dorset, Ohio, where he attended school.

On February 5, 1944 he married Ruth Louise Carpenter and the couple farmed in the Dorset community for two years. In 1946, they moved to Phoenix for reasons of Mr. Gnau's health and he was a custodian for the Phoenix schools. Since 1967, they have spent their summers in the Chester community and wintered in Phoenix.

Mr. Gnau was a member of the Sunnyslope Presbyterian church in Phoenix and had been a member of the Denmark Grange in Dorset, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his son, Daniel T. Gnau III of Rockville, Md.; two grandchildren, three brothers, Franklin Gnau of Chardon, Ohio, Edward Gnau of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Fred Gnau of Westlake, Ohio; and by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Herman of Jefferson, Ohio, and Mrs. Agnes Schribner of Conneaut, Ohio.

Mr. Gnau was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson; a brother, Harry Gnau, and a sister, Florence Blazek.
