SATURDAY RITES FOR JENIE RICHARDS, 96

Mrs. Jennie Ida Richards, 96, of Grinnell, widow of George W. Richards, died at a local hospital Thursday morning following 4 1/2 years of hospitalization. She formerly made her home at 409 Fifth Ave.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Northside Friends church with the Rev. W.A. Spring, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church in Laurel, and the Rev. Kenneth Headland, pastor of the Northside Friends church, officiating.

Vocal music for the services was provided by Bob Butler, accompanied by Elbert Smith at the organ. Pallbearers were Elmer Criswell, Ray George, Booker Kiner, Russell Ladely, A.O. McDowell, and Croft Pilgrim.

Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery with Smith Funeral Home in charge.

The daughter of Martin and Mary Hughes Cavana, she was born Aug. 22nd, 1866, near Holland Patent, N.Y. When she was a child the family moved to Eldora, Iowa, and she completed her school there.

In March, 1893, she was united in marriage with George W. Richards. To this union were born three children, two of whom survive: Mrs. L.V. (Thelma) Willison of Rte. 2, Montezuma, and Mrs. R.K. (Rachel) Storey of Owosso, Mich.

Mr. and Mrs. Richards moved to Grinnell in 1912 from Eldora and she had made her home here since. She was a member of the W.C.T.U. and a charter member of Northside Friends church. She was active in church affairs and had been a Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by her two daughters, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. Richards was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, in 1949, following 56 years of marriage; her son, Charles Wesley, who died in infancy; one granddaughter, who died as a young girl while she and her parents were being held as prisoners of war by the Japanese during World War II; and 12 brothers and sisters.
