RITES HELD FOR MR. PICKERING

Claude Pickering, 85, of 1122 Reed St., Grinnell, died Sunday evening, Sept. 18, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel Ogata of the First United Presbyterian Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Robert W. Boyd, Shell Criswell, Ted Criswell, Wendell McDonald, Gene Oliver and Don Sowerwine.

Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Jonathan and Mary McCune Pickering, he was born March 12, 1898, near Unionville, Mo. He came to Grinnell in 1928 and retired in 1965 from the Rock Island Railroad, where he had been working as a section man in maintenance.

Mr. Pickering served with the U.S. Army during World War II. On March 3, 1945, he was married to Mable Edna Curtis at Montezuma.

He is survived by his wife and a stepson, Robert G. Wilfong. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Oscar Pickering; and his sisters, Leona Smith, Dolly Sears, Bertha Adkins, Stella Sloan and Isabelle Oliver.
