E.B. COX

E.B. Cox was born in Indiana in 1842. When but four years of age his parents moved to Lynnville, where two years later he lost his father. Thus thrown upon his own resources he learned self reliance. In 1864 he married Miss May Dryden, of Newton, from which union four children were born, three of whom with his wife survive him. Mr. Cox engaged in his present business in Lynnville where he remained till 1881, when he came to Grinnell and engaged in the produce business. The funeral was held from the house at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, conducted by the Rev. E.M. Vittum, and his remains were laid to rest in the Hazelwood cemetery. The music for these impressive services was furnished by Messrs A.C. Harriman, E.B. Brande, Manly Kendall and Dr. P.E. Somers. The pall bearers were C.N. Perry, H.C. Spencer, C.A. Swisher, L.L. Benson, William Miles and Dr. E.B. Wiley. Floral offerings were given by the Masons, the Woodmen, the Fire Company and Franklyn Club, each of which organizations accompanied the body to the cemetery. The services at the grave were in charge of the Masons, A.F. Barnes acting as Worshipful Master.

Since Mr. Cox has been actively connected with the business interests of the city, he has shown himself a man of energy and influence. He has taken a prominent position in local affairs of the city and county, has kept himself well informed on current topics and took a deep interest in political movements. He had a birth right in the Friends church and retained membership in that organization while living in Lynnville. He was a good husband, a kind and indulgent father and a good neighbor. He leaves a mother, a wife and three children, Mr. D.M. Cox and Misses Hallie and Ola Cox, to mourn the loss of a dutiful son, kind husband and indulgent father.

Those present from out of town were Mr. Cox's mother, Mrs. S. Presnell of Kansas, A.F. Rayburn and wife, Mrs. John Hall, Mrs. A.M. Hogan, J.F. Dryden, J.G., and H.Rayburn of Montezuma, J.C. Kibby, Mrs. Ellen, R., and Elmer Rayburn of Brooklyn and J.J. Sparks and wife and John Dryden of New Sharon.
