ZADIE THOMPSON

Zadie Thompson, 67, of Rte. 2, Montezuma, died Sunday, Dec. 3, of injuries she sustained in an automobile accident south of Grinnell on Iowa Highway 146.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Raymond Lott officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and vocalist was Sherry Shultz. Pallbearers were Richard Clayton, Ronald Clayton, Marty Duffus, Mike Duffus, Gary Meldrem, James Meldrem, Randy Meldrem and Charles Whisenand.

Burial was in the Brooklyn Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Zadie Thompson Memorial Fund and sent in care of the funeral home.

The daughter of Clifford and Evy Sanders Meldrem, she was born May 2, 1927, at Malcom. She graduated from Malcom High School, and following her education she taught in rural schools.

On Aug. 21, 1948, she was married to Richard Ross. The couple farmed near Brooklyn. She attended th Church of the Brethren.

Following Mr. Ross's death in 1982, she moved to Grinnell where she was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She was married to Lester Thompson July 12, 1985, and the couple lived in Montezuma. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Malcom Alumni Association.

Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Jane Redix of Nevada, Shirley Grimm of Brooklyn and Susie Edelen of Grinnell; one son, Wayne Ross of Coralville; three stepdaughters, Gerry Malcolm and Esther VanSante, both of Pella, and Mary Simpson of Hartwick; one stepson, Raymond Thompson of Montezuma; 10 grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim Meldrem of Gilbert; and one sister, Merlene Whisenand of Kelley. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; three brothers, Marlyn, Lyle and Claire Meldrem; and one sister, Norma Duffus.
