JOAN R. VITERA

Joan R. (Olin) Vitera, 68, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell.

Her funeral was Friday, March 17 at Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma. The Rev. Dennis Dorsheimer of Jackson Church of Christ officiated.

Marty Duffus sang "Star Dust" and "How Great Thou Art." Susie Bowman sang "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." Kathleen Ramsey was the organist.

Casket bearers were John Griffin, Chris Wray, Steve Bruggeman, Tom Sheets, Eldon Snook and Tom Kriegel. Honorary casket bearers were Shane Stephenson, Chris Northcutt, Nikki Stephenson, Joseph Stephenson, Sarah Northcutt and Samantha Vitera. Interment followed in Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River.

Joan R. Olin was born February 24, 1932 at Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Julia (Lewis) Olin. She attended and graduated from Deep River High School.

On January 6, 1951 she was united in marriage with Jimmie J. Vitera in Sigourney, Iowa. The couple had one son and four daughters.

She worked for the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office for 5 and one-half years as a dispatcher before retiring in 1994.

She was a very active member of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post No. 8876 and served as president for four years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jimmie; one brother, Douglas C. Olin and a very special aunt, Ruth King.

Joan is survived by her children, Robert Vitera of Grinnell, Cindy Northcutt of Lynnville, Nancy Stephenson of Montezuma, Sally Vitera of Grinnell, and Julee Hendrickson of Grinnell; six grandchildren, Chris and Sarah Northcutt, Shane, Joseph and Nikki Stephenson; and Samantha Vitera; two sisters, Ruby Blanchard of Moline, Ill., and Jeannie Richman of Montezuma; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.

Joan lived a good life and touched the heart of many. She will be deeply missed.

Memorials may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice or Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department.
