DR. MATTIE CRAIN
RITES HELD SUNDAY

Dr. Mattie Crain, for 57 years a medical practitioner in Deep River and adjacent areas, died Dec. 8 at the Chicago Memorial hospital. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian church in Deep River, conducted by Rev. James Glass, and Rev. L.C. Smith of Appleton, Wis.

Mrs. Hazel Dale played the funeral music and accompanied Mrs. Rose Hornbeck and Mrs. Marion Axtell who sang "No Night There" and "Home of The Soul.

Interment was in the family lot in Goldenrod cemetery under direction of the Steffy Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Evan Elliott, Wess Ross, P.J. Icenbice, Paul Light, Burdette Cranston and George Jack. Honorary bearers were Harry Taylor, Dr. Maxwell and Lester Jordan.

Martha, later known as Mattie, daughter of Robert and Agnes McClune, was born Oct. 10, 1873, near Coal Valley, Ill., and passed away in Chicago, Dec. 8, 1960, at 87 years, 1 month and 28 days.

When Mattie was six moths old, the family moved to a farm near Keswick, Iowa.

She taught at Green View and Buckeye schools before enrolling at Northern Indiana Normal school, Valparaiso, Ind., to study pharmacy. After graduation from Valparaiso, she attended the Northwestern School of Medicine in Chicago. Two weeks before graduation, on May 30, 1900, she was united in marriage with Lewis Franklin Crain, a fellow medical student.

Dr. Mattie and Dr. L.F. Crain practiced medicine in Dongola and Pana, Ill., for three years before moving to Deep River, in 1903.

Dr. Mattie Crain was an active member of the First Presbyterian church of Deep River. She served as treasurer of the Ladies Aid society for many years and as a member of the Board of Trustees. She was a member of the Mayflower Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served on the school board of the Deep River school and the Poweshiek County Board of Education. She was cited for her work with the American Red Cross association in recognition of her service to the organization.

In 1955 she received a 50-year certificate and life membership in the Iowa Medical society. At the time she and Dr. L.F., were honored by the people of the community for their long service to Deep River families.

Dr. Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and a sister. She leaves her two daughters, Mr. G. Malcom Trout, of East Lansing, Mich., and Mrs. Floyd E. Larson, of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; five grandchildren, James Lee Trout, St. Joseph, Mich., Nelda Trout Stuck, Sacramento, Calif., and Sonjia, Sandra and Suzann Larson, Clarendon Hills, Ill.; five great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
