CHARLES E. STALLCOP

Sitting quietly by his friends on the morning of December 22nd, the immortal part of Charles Stallcop silently and peacefully departed for the Great Unknown. His death was unexpected. Outside the earth was mantled with snow and the Christmas time of peace and good will among men seems a fitting time for a good man to close his earthly accounts and go to his God.

Mr. Stallcop was born in Minnesota, Sept. 9th, 1858, graduating from Carleton College, at Northfield, and then came in 1881 to Iowa, graduating from the Drake Law School in 1884.

Going from there to Sac County he taught school, served four years as county superintendent and also four years as State Representative. He also acquired possession of the Sac County News and was active as a speaker and debater on public questions.

He become the law partner of C.E. Lane and in 1902 they purchased the Brooklyn Chronicle of which he became editor and publisher. He was at this time interested in the Brotherhood of American Yeomen, having prepared the first ritual of the order was elected one of the directors and in 1906 vice president which office he held at the time of his death. He finally gave all of his time to the society, removing to Des Moines for that purpose and the Chronicle passed into the hands of its present owner.

He was married in 1888 to Miss Grace L. Robinson, who with their daughter, Edna, now Mrs. Robert McGuire of Denver, Colo., survives him. He was never essentially a money maker. An idea always looked bigger to him than a dollar, but as an editor and legislator he has struck many a blow for the betterment of humanity and for raising the standard of life. A man whom people trusted, conservative and a wise counselor; reticent and retiring he had a latent power that was potential and he will be sorely missed and his memory cherished by many aside from his more intimate circle.--Brooklyn Chronicle.
