IRA ASHING, 91, RITES SATURDAY

Ira Oliver Ashing, 91, of 1211 Hamlin St., died Wednesday evening at Grinnell General Hospital following a brief illness.

The son of Hiram and Melissa Burrows Ashing, Mr. Ashing was born near Blue Point, Poweshiek County, Iowa, on Oct. 18, 1878. Mr. Ashing had farmed near Blue Point, in northern Iowa and South Dakota before returning to Grinnell to make his home 35 years ago.

He was a member of the IOOF Lodge in Algona, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Lee; 3 children and 6 step-children--Fred L. Ashing, of Ladora, Lester E. Ashing of Gilman, Mrs. Iris R. Bagley of Los Gatos, Calif., Marvin Davidson of Denver Colo., Mrs. Marie Green of Las Vegas, Nev., Mrs. Geneva See of Grinnell, Everett Leighty of Kansas City, Kan., and Mrs. Irene Collum and Mrs. Georgia Davis, both of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; 24 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 18 step-great grandchildren; and a brother, Charles W. Ashing of New Lisbon, Wis.

Mr. Ashing was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

Funeral services for Mr. Ashing will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Beebe of the Mayflower Home officiating.

Burial will be made in Lower Blue Point cemetery.
