MARY HARRIS DIES IN PHOENIX

Mary Pilgrim Harris, 83, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Grinnell, died Jan. 6 at The Beatitudes Care Center in Phoenix.

Services were held Jan. 12 in the Life Center at the Beatitudes Care Center. Interment of ashes will take place later in West Cemetery, Middlebury, Vt.

She was born in Grinnell in 1902 to Mary Sulser and Egbert Swank Pilgrim, both of whom died within a year of her birth, and was raised by her aunt and uncle Anna Sulser and Perley Pilgrim. She was a graduate of Grinnell College with the class of 1925. She taught in Logan, Utah; Woodbine and Ames. She was married to Stanton A. Harris and lived for 30 years in Westfield, N.J., where she was a substitute teacher in the Westfield elementary schools for 10 years. She later lived in Penfield, N.Y., before moving to Phoenix. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Westfield.

She is survived by her husband, Stanton A. Harris, Phoenix; two daughters, Ruth Carlson, Arvada, Colo., and Beth Chapek, Sonona Beach, Calif.; one son, Robert S. Harris, Rochester, N.Y., nine grandchildren and a brother, Morey Pilgrim, Grinnell. A niece, Mary Edna Sherman, lives in Grinnell.
