The Grinnell (IA) Herald; June 5, 1925

ANOTHER CIVIL WAR VETERAN, ANSWERS THE LAST ROLL CALL.

The bugle notes had scarcely died in commemoration of the death of our commander, H.I. Davis, when the grim reaper again invaded our ranks, and took from among us Comrade H.M.H. Day, a member of Co. H., 7th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, who died here in Grinnell on May 25th, 1925.

He served in the above Co., and Regiment from November 12th, 1861, until December 20th, 1864, when he was honorably discharged, serving a little over three years, and bore his full share of the privations, and dangers incident to those long campaigns with fortitude, and patience.

He was one of the early members of the Post joining September 17th, 1883, then it appears a Transfer card was issued to him, and he was absent for a long time. Our Roster does not show where he was during the years he was absent but that he returned, and the funeral services were in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. E.M. Vittum, and the remains laid to rest in Hazelwood cemetery.

By order of the Post.
P.D. Burton
Adjutant.
J.S. Rollins
Commander.
