RITES APRIL 17 FOR MRS. SHELEY

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 17, at Long's Funeral Home in Anita for Mrs. Mary Sheley, 98, who died Monday, April 14, at the Crestwood nursing home. Mrs. Sheley was the last of a family of ten children and would have been 99 years old June 14.

The Rev. Verne R. Willey officiated at the 2 p.m. services. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.

She was the daughter of George W. and Henrietta Garmen Smith and was born in Princeton, Ill., June 14, 1870. She came to Iowa with her parents at the age of 2 1/2 settling at Montezuma where she graduated from high school. She was bookkeeper for her brothers in their implement store for two years and later taught school for a year. She was married to Fred M. Sheley Feb. 22, 1893 and they farmed north of Anita from 1913 to 1920 when they moved into Anita. Mr. Sheley died in 1958 and Mrs. Sheley continued to make her home here until she fell and suffered a broken hip July 24, 1961 and since that time had made her home at the Crestwood.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Madeline) Carlton of Anita, three granddaughters, Mrs. Mylo (Virginia) Robson of Downey, Calif., Mrs. Bill (Carol) Shaffer of Normal, Ill., and Mrs. Arnold (Evangeline) Kuester of Adair; six great-grandchildren and two great-great granddaughters, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Sheley was a member of the Anita Congregational church and the OES for which she had been a member for 49 years.

Attending the services from this area were Mr. and Mrs. Ross W. Meldrem, Hazel Dunshee and Cliff Smith.
