The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Aug. 21, 1897

--W.H. Hogue died at his home in second ward Friday, Sept. 17, at two o'clock p.m., after being afflicted with a cancer, over two years, one year of which time he was confined to his house. Mr. Hogue was born May 20, 1832, near Barnesville, Belmont Co., Ohio, hence was in his 66th year. In 1857 he went to Bureau Co., Illinois, near Princeton. Later he came to Poweshiek, settling near Malcom. January 13, 1870, he was united in marriage to Miss Esther Mears, who with two sons, Mortimer C. and Everett E., survives him. In 1882 they moved to Grinnell. Mr. Hogue lived a quiet life here, respected by all who knew him. He was converted June 1st, 1897, was baptized and received into the Methodist Episcopal Church, and since that time his faith in Christ has been steady and submissive to the will of God. He talked often with his family of his departure, selected his pall-bearers and made other arrangements for his burial. During these months of suffering he was always patient. He often expressed the desire that his last hours might be peaceful and without suffering. God granted his desire, his last moments were breathed out quietly and without a struggle, just falling asleep to awake in a better and brighter world where there is no more sickness nor suffering, where parting is no more. He requested his loved ones to meet him there. They have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement. May the God of all peace comfort their hearts and may they live in the hope of a happy reunion when their work on earth is done. The funeral was held at the house Sunday at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.E. Corley. The friends who assisted at the burial service were R.C. Ross, Dwight Welch, W.W. Sargent, A.J. Neely, M.P. Swartz and W.C. White. Relatives present from out of town were Mrs. Edith Mears Cherry and Mrs. Lydia Benson of Wayne, Neb.
