RHIONEER HOIT

Rhioneer Hoit, the oldest resident of Poweshiek County, died at his home in Grinnell, Monday, Nov. 20th, from the infirmities of old age. He was born in Butler county, Ohio, December 4th, 1835, and came to Poweshiek county, Iowa, with his parents when he was 9 years old, 67 years ago. We can get some idea of the vast changes since then, by noting that as a boy the Indian children were his playmates. He has been a resident of the county ever since. He was a step-nephew of Judge Ogden, the first judge of Poweshiek county. He was converted in early life and joined the Protestant Methodist church, but afterwards became a member of the Dunkard Church.

On the 24th day of August, 1855, he was married to Miss Mary Faircloth, who with five of the nine children born to them is still living. He was a great sufferer during the last year of his life, but bore his sufferings with much patience and at last met his God in peace. He was a good citizen, a kind husband and loving father and always ready to do that which was right. He will be greatly missed by a host of friends, and the home. The five children were present at the time of his death: Mrs. G.A. Bonewell of Grinnell, J.E. Hoit, of New Sharon, Mrs. E.M. Gregson, of Oskaloosa, Mrs. J.P. Fowler, of Grinnell, Chas. Hoit, of Winnipeg, Can. Rev. T.B. Hughes preached the funeral sermon for this aged veteran, Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22, at the home and the body was laid to rest in Hazelwood cemetery.
