EMMETT J. MESSER

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma, for Emmett J. Messer, 75, of Deep River. Rev. Fred Pierce of the Dewitt Methodist Church, officiated.

Mrs. Verla Van Dee was organist. Selections included "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Casketbearers were Ronald Grimm, Virtus Cordes, Jerry Van Dee, Kenneth Wallace and Donald Fitzsimmons. Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery, Montezuma.

Emmett J. Messer son of John and Alta (Norton) Messer, was born Nov. 8, 1908 near Guernsey, Iowa and died Sept. 8, 1984 at his farm east of Deep River.

He graduated from Guernsey High School. On Feb. 8, 1933 he was united in marriage with Mary Byers. They farmed in the Guernsey and Deep River area. His wife Mary died on Oct. 8, 1979. He was a member of Modern Woodman. Emmett enjoyed meeting, visiting and joking with people. He enjoyed going to farm sales and working with horses.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary and two infant daughters.

Emmett is survived by one daughter; Louise "Jake" and her husband, Roger Van Ersvelde of Brooklyn; one brother Harold Messer of Prauge, Okla., and two sisters: Bernice Fitzsmimmons of Albia and Dorothy Carpenter of Brooklyn.
