KELLOGG MAN SHOOTS WIFE, KILLS HIMSELF
A Kellogg man is dead and his estranged wife is in serious condition in Mercy Hospital, Des Moines as the result of an attempted murder-suicide Thursday afternoon at Maytag Plant 1.
Police said Ronald Wayne Carver, 26, a night supervisor in the porcelain department of Maytag Plant 2, entered Plant 1 shortly before 1 p.m. and approached an employee on the fifth floor. Police said the unidentified employee saw a gun in Carver's belt, backed off and went to his supervisor, telling him he had better go to the sixth floor. Shots were heard and the police were called.
Police Chief Ed Foster said Carver apparently confronted his wife, Connie Lee (Vannoy) Carver, 25, on the sixth floor and shot one time. A witness to the shooting said Mrs. Carver went down and was shot twice more where she lay. Carver then turned the revolver on himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Foster said the shooting apparently resulted over a family matter with one of the couple filing for divorce in the past few days.
Mrs. Carver was taken to Skiff hospital by the Fire Department ambulance and transferred to the Des Moines hospital.
Her condition was listed as serious by a hospital spokesman this morning, suffering both arm and chest injuries.
Steffy Funeral Home in Montezuma will be in charge of arrangements.
NOTE: Ronald Wayne Carver died 5 Nov 1970. He was the son of Lovell and Helen Acord Carver. --MH
