VIRGIL 'BILL' JONES

Virgil "Bill" D. Jones, 83, of Grinnell died of cancer Saturday, Dec. 2, at Friendship Manor.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Friends Church, with the Rev. Keith Briggs officiating. Organist will be Margaret Wheeler.

Pallbearers will be Del Coppinger, Gary Lowry, Terry Lowry, Randall Nichols, David Palmer and Dennis Palmer. Honorary bearers will be Lyman Case, Ralph Fleener, Tom Lowry, Duke McCurry, Laverne Morrison and Arnold Schulte. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Friends Church or Hospice Grinnell.

He was the son of William H. and Maude Van Bogart Jones and was born Sept. 10, 1912, in Grinnell. He was a 1930 graduate of Grinnell High School and also attended Grinnell College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was married to Ona Whitaker Sept. 18, 1938, in Lancaster, Mo., and the couple lived in Grinnell. He was employed by Arnold Shoes and the Grinnell Shoe Co. before entering the Navy. Following his discharge, he returned to Grinnell and was associated with Grinnell Livestock Exchange. He became part owner and manager of the business in 1955. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Jones attended the First Friends Church. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion, the V.F.W., the Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a 50-year member.

He is survived by his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Norma Downer.
