CHARLES AUSTIN SERVICES TODAY

Charles Washington Austin, 87, of Rte. 3, Grinnell, died Monday morning when the tractor he was driving tipped over, pinning him beneath it.

Authorities said Mr. Austin was moving dirt on his farm on Rte. 3, Grinnell, when the tractor tipped as it was being driven on a slope.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Funeral services for Mr. Austin were held at 2 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sam Reaves, pastor of the Grinnell Assembly of God Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner, and vocalists were Mr. and Mrs. Emil Gerard. Pallbearers were Clyde Austin, John Austin, Vaughn Austin, Dale Kimm, Walter Oltrogge and Pake Terrazas. Honorary pallbearers were George Cyma Sr., F.A. Jones, John McIlrath, William Nagel, F.W. Tomasek, and Everett Wood. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. Austin's name may be made to Grinnell General Hospital.

The son of Benjamin and Rachel Deakins Austin, he was born Feb. 15, 1888, in Telford, Tenn. In 1916, he moved to Iowa City and farmed near Oxford, Iowa.

On June 19, 1918, he was married to Arta F. Gegenheimer at Iowa City. The Austin Family moved to their farm northeast of Grinnell in 1936.

Following the death of his first wife in 1944, Mr. Austin was married to Dorothy L. Reid in Iowa City.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children, Clyde Austin of Grinnell, Mrs. Irene Terrazas of Santa Fe, N.M., Mrs. Dale (Inez) Kimm of Iowa City, Mrs. Walter (Audrey) Oltrogge of Grinnell, Arlo Vaughn "Doc" Austin of Arlington, Tex., and John C. Austin of Cleveland, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Benjamin Austin of Bristol, Tenn., and Glen Austin of Telford, Tenn.; and four sisters, Mrs. Sarah McCrackin of Limestone, Tenn., Mrs. Ella Imhoff of Carpentersville, Ill., Mrs. Catherine Sentman of Iowa City, and Mrs. Lucy Campbell of Jonesboro, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Arta; one son, Wayne, who was a prisoner of war during the Korean conflict and was presumed dead in 1954; two grandchildren; two brothers, James Russell Austin and Hiram D. Austin; and three sisters, Effie Leota Austin, Mary Estella Austin, and Mrs. Lola C. Broyles.
