BESSIE RIVERS RITES TODAY

Bessie V. Rivers, 86, the widow of Jake Rivers, died Friday evening, July 26, at Grinnell General Hospital, following an exended illness.

The daughter of Thomas and Cynthia Wymore Playle, she was born June 25, 1888, at Barnes City, and later received her education in the schools of that community.

She was married to Jake Rivers in 1904, and the couple lived in the Searsboro community following their marriage. They lived in Marshalltown from 1930 until 1945, then moved to Minnesota for five years. For the past 2 1/2 years, Mrs. Rivers had lived in Grinnell. She was a member of the West Liberty Church of Christ.

Survivors include seven daughters, Alice Wittrup of Ely, Minn., Winifred Schmidt of Grinnell, Fern Bajgert of Marshalltown, Maxine Richardson of Marshalltown, Elizabeth Thompson of Marshalltown, Cleora Kremer of Marshalltown, and Ina Rivers, also of Marshalltown; 18 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rivers was the last member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake, in 1963; a daughter, Lena; three sisters and four brothers.

Services for Mrs. Rivers were held at 2 p.m. today at the West Liberty Church of Christ near Searsboro, with the Rev. James T. Ross officiating.

Pallbearers were Carl Wittrup, Henry Schmidt, Harold Schmidt, Russell Schmidt, Roger Bailey and Myrle Stephenson.

The James-Schalinske Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
