VURSEL PARMLEY RITES ARE HELD

Vursel P. Parmley, 84, of Gilman died Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Montezuma Senior Home.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Stephen G. Miller, pastor of the Gilman Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud.

Pallbearers were Harold Fleener, Bill Gilbreaith, Don Starnes, Wayne Wiley, Joe Wright and Bernard Young. Honorary bearers were Robert D. Hamilton, Clifford Johnson, Daniel Parmley, Glen Phipps, Vernon Turner and Keith Worthy. Burial was in Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman.

He was the son of Lute and Lulu Elliott Parmley and was born Aug. 15, 1904, in Rock Creek Township, Jasper County. He attended rural schools and Grinnell High School.

He was married to Cecile Messer Aug. 11, 1926, in Newton. The couple lived in the Grinnell area before moving to Gilman in 1952. Mr. Parmley retired in 1969 after having worked as a road and bridge builder. He had been a resident of the Montezuma Senior Home since 1985.

He is survived by a son, Thomas of Montezuma; two daughters, Mary E. Barker and Linda Sue Parmley, both of Gilman; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Iona Wright of Ladysmith, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecile; two children, Jack and Aloha Marie Parmley; his parents; and one sister, Vina Castor.
