THOMAS PARMLEY

Thomas Paul Parmley, 65, of Grinnell died Sunday, Aug. 27, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ken Wallace, pastor of th Newburg-Chester Parish, officiating. Pianist was Betty Ann Battey. Casket bearers were Doug Callison, Keith Garwood, Bill Gilbreaith, Gordon Felper, Dave Ferneau and Craig Schmidt. Honorary bearers were Larry German, Rex Murphy, Ed Patten, Jim Rose and Jim "Whitey" Hotchkin.

Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

He was born Nov. 23, 1934, in Grinnell to Vursel and Cecil Messer Parmley. He was a 1952 graduate of Grinnell High School.

He was married to Ruth Preston in 1954. Mr. Parmley worked at the Maytag Co. in Newton and the Three Elms Restaurant in Grinnell.

In 1966, he was married to Mary Long Butler in Sycamore, Ill. They lived in Grinnell and operated the Longhorn Restaurant. They later moved to Montezuma and operated the Maid Rite and Tom and Mary's Restaurant.

Following his retirement in the early 1990s, they returned to Grinnell. Mr. Parmley was a member of the Eagles and Elks lodges and the Grinnell American Legion.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Lisa Parmley of Council Bluffs and Valerie Leviton and Sylvia Parmley, both of Tucson, Ariz.; five sons, Chris of Council Bluffs, Brad, Rick and Michael Butler, all of Grinnell, and Randy Butler of Walden, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Barker and Linda Parmley, both of Gilman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jack.
