D.F. WHITE PASSES ON

Former Mayor of Grinnell for Two Terms Dies at His home Here Thursday Evening

FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD MONDAY AFTERNOON

From The Smith Home at 1103 Broad Street at 2 O'clock--Burial Will Be In Hazelwood

A man who has twice been honored by the people of Grinnell by the highest office in their gift, that of mayor of this city, passed away suddenly but peacefully Thursday evening at 6:40 o'clock at his home on Commercial street. Daniel Franklin White, but everybody called him "Dan," is no longer with us but his quiet friendliness and his genuine interest in everything that was for the welfare of Grinnell will not be forgotten here. Mr. White had passed his 76th birthday the second of last February.

He had been in increasingly feeble health. Thursday he seemed much as usual and as had been his custom for the past few months retired very early. He had only just lain down when he passed away.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Smith home at 1103 Broad Street, conducted by Rev. R.L. Keeton. Interment will be in Hazelwood.

Mr. White is survived by his faithful wife, two daughters, Mrs. Bertie Frost of this city and Mrs. Anna Preston of Los Angeles, a grand daughter, Thelma Alley, now a graduate student in Columbia University, a grandson, Frederic Preston and one brother, Thomas, of Vernon, Colorado. Mrs. Preston, Miss Alley and Thomas are all expected to attend the funeral.

Mr. White was born in Pennsylvania but when he was a young man he came to Iowa to try his fortune in what was then the west. He located first on a farm near Ewart and later successfully operated a general store at Reasnor. From Reasnor the family moved to Grinnell forty-one years ago and Grinnell has been their home ever since.

When he came here, Mr. White engaged in the insurance business. He was one of the founders and director for many years of the Mutual Home Loan & Savings Assoc. He was successful and prosperous in his business affairs and as he had always displayed a great interest in the community it was only natural that he should take a prominent part in city government. His first public office was that of councilman. He was a member of the council from 1903 to 1907. His administration was marked at all times by a sincere determination to give Grinnell the best service in his power and he honored the office to which he had been chosen.

Since then he has lived quietly in Grinnell, friendly, interested and active in so far as his strength permitted.

He was a friend to many and the community which he served to the best of his ability honors his memory.
