JAMES RUTHERFORD
James Rutherford was born in County Down, Ireland, May 8, 1848; died in Grinnell, Ia., July 15, 1915.
Mr. Rutherford came to America when a young man nineteen years old, and for a few years lived in Illinois, then coming to Iowa, where he has continuously made his home except a short stay in Colorado.
April 25, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary C. White, who died in 1892. To this union was born a son, Fred Rutherford, who died in 1910, and a daughter, Mrs. John Struble, now living in Victoria, B.C.
December 25, 1893, Mr. Rutherford and Miss Fannie H. Sherman were united in marriage. To them were born two daughters and one son, Miss Esther Leola, Miss Ruth Almira and Henry Sherman Rutherford who died in January, 1901.
Mr. Rutherford was one of a family of thirteen children, six sons and seven daughters. Those living are Thos. Rutherford, of Ross, Ia.; Mrs. McCauley, living in Pennsylvania; Mrs. Adams, living in Ireland, and Mrs. McNarey, living in New Zealand.
Although born in Ireland he was of Scotch parentage, both parents being Scotch, from whom he inherited those strong characteristics that gave him very positive and well matured ideas on all great moral questions.
Mr. Rutherford was a man of few words, out four-square in honor and integrity. To him, his home was his greatest joy and happiness, to which he gave himself, unselfishly, sparing no cost within his power or ability, to make his home one where love and happiness should rule supreme.
