He was a successful farmer and farmed in Poweshiek county until his health failed. He moved to Brooklyn and then to Grinnell.

Our father we loved, has left us,
He has gone to his home above,
Leaving us to carry the banner
For our Father dear we loved.

Some day we hope to meet him,
Someday we know not when,
To clasp his hand, in a better
land
Never to part again.
