Margaret Rutherford was born in Rock Island county, Ill., March 24, 1862. She was the oldest of nine children born to Robert J. Rutherford and Mary Campbell Rutherford. She moved to Poweshiek county with her parents about 1867 and lived on a farm about two miles southwest of Ewart until her marriage in November, 1879, with John McKeag, who then lived on a farm almost adjoining. They lived there until January, 1903, when they moved to Grinnell.

This happy union continued until the death of Mr. McKeag on October 8 of this year. She survived him only two months and eighteen days, passing away Dec. 26.

To this union were born five children, one of whom, Mary, died at the tender age of two years in 1883. She is survived by one son, James of Chicago, and three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth McKnight of Valley Junction, Mrs. Jane Skidmore of Grinnell and Mrs. Sadie Ditzler of Oskaloosa and by two grandchildren, Louise and Helen Skidmore; also by three brothers and three sisters: Mrs. Fannie Stewart of Mitchell, S.D., Thomas Rutherford of Audubon, Iowa, John Rutherford of Palo Saskatchewan, Canada, Mrs. Jane Rutherford of Hastings, Neb., Miss Nancy Rutherford of Audubon and Robert J. From early youth she was a member of the United Presbyterian church at Ewart, transferring her membership to the church in Grinnell upon its organization. She has been a most faithful attendant and her consisent Christian life and many fine qualities have made her beloved and honored wherever she was known.
