MRS. ELIZA JANE THORP PASSES

Mrs. Eliza Jane Thorp passed away at 1:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Phil German. She had been in failing health since she suffered a stroke of paralysis fourteen months ago.

Mrs. Thorp had lived in Grinnell continuously since 1882 and in Iowa for probably seventy five years, having come to Marshall county with her parents when she was a little girl. She was born in Jefferson county, Indiana, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Baty, and was 81 years old the tenth of this motnth. She was married in Marshall county in 1866 to George R. Thorp, who preceded her in death.

To this union were born seven children, of whom four survive, Oliver, Mrs. Laura German and F.W. Thorp of Grinnell and John of Twin Falls, Idaho, who was unable to come to his mother's funeral on account of illness in his own family. James, Lavinia and Will passed away before her.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Snyder Bros. chapel, conducted by Rev. J.L. Frederick. Burial was in Hazelwood. Her last surviving sister, Mrs. Rachel Ann Pegg, came from Marshalltown to attend the funeral.

Mrs. Thorp was a loving wife, a devoted mother and a true friend. Her memory will be cherished by the many who learned to esteem her during her many years of active life in Grinnell.
