JOHN J. WHEATON

John J. Wheaton, formerly a resident of the Grinnell vicinity, died on Aug. 20 at the home of his brother, George Wheaton, in Corning, Cal., after an illness of eight or nine months. He was 58 years of age.

Mr. Wheaton was born on Feb. 3, 1858, in Manchester, Vt., but when he was a mere child the family moved to Iowa and settled on the farm just north of Grinnell which is still known as the James Wheaton place. Here John Wheaton grew to manhood, and for a number of years he remained on the home place and farmed it. Later he went to Chicago, where he engaged in business for a number of years, and then moved to California. During most of the period of his residence in this state he resided in Oakland, but when his fatal illness came on him he went to the home of his brother in Corning and remained there until his death.

He leaves two brothers, Geo. Wheaton of Corning, Cal., and Chas. Wheaton of Welton, Ariz., and one sister, Miss Mary Wheaton, of Davenport. The sister came to Grinnell to attend the funeral.

The body reached Grinnell Saturday morning and was taken in charge by the Odd Fellows, of which Mr. Wheaton was a member. The services at the grave in Hazelwood cemetery were in accordance with the Odd Fellow ritual.

Many friends remember Mr. Wheaton well and received the news of his death with genuine regret.

CARD OF THANKS

I wish to thank the members of the I.O.O.F. lodge and all the friends whose kindness and ready sympathy have been extended to me in a time of sorrow.
MISS MARY WHEATON.
