VERA ELENE HAY

Vera Elene Hay, 86, of Grinnell died Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. Francis Manor.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lon L. Lewis, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Margaret Wheeler, and pallbearers will be Alan Arthur, William Arthur, Dick Clark, Junior Fisher, Marlo Hay and Michael Hay. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Perry and Nellie Heitsman Arthur, she was born March 5, 1910, on the family farm south of Lynnville. She later moved with her family to a farm west of Searsboro, and she was a 1928 graduate of Searsboro High School.

She was married to John E. Hay Nov. 4, 1930, in Montezuma, and the couple lived in the Grinnell area. She was employed by the Grinnell Shoe Factory. They moved to a farm southwest of Searsboro in 1951 and returned to Grinnell in 1977.

Mrs. Hay was a member of the Hickory Grove Church in Jasper County.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her children, Shelvey Jean and Jerry Lee Hay, in a school bus-train accident in 1950; two brothers, Cecil and Cyril Arthur; and a sister, Eva Reeves.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
