FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. CARLSEN

Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Carlsen, were held at the Grace Methodist Church in Brooklyn Monday, May 20th at 2 p.m. Rev. M.C. Shupe and Rev. Robert Peath officiating.

Casket bearers were Carroll Smith, Warren Smith, Clinton Smith, James Doonan, Larry Dayton, Myron Byers.

Interment was in the Hartwick Cemetery.

OBITUARY

Ada Elizabeth Doty, eldest child of Abel and Laura Sheets Doty, was born August 24, 1879 in Iowa County, Iowa. When she was a small child she moved with her parents to Poweshiek County, where she spent the remainder of her life with the exception of a short time when she lived in Tama County.

She received her education in the rural schools in the Brooklyn vicinty. She became a member of the Methodist Church in her youth and maintained her membership there until her death. She was always interested in the work of the church, and as long as health would permit took an active part. She belonged to the Miriam Sunday School Class and was always vitally interested in its activities. She was a member of Brooklyn Chapter 131 Order of the Eastern Star and received her Fifty Year Pin in 1950.

In 1900 she was united in marriage to Rolla Smith. To this union one son, William, was born. Mr. Smith lost his life in the performance of his duty as night marshall in Chelsea, Ia. in 1901.

Later, Mrs. Smith was married to Grant Ostrom of Hartwick, Iowa. To them were born four children: Grace (Mrs. Freeman Dayton of Deep River), Percy of Brooklyn, and two boys who died in infancy. Mr. Ostrom was struck by lightning and killed in 1912. In 1914 Mrs. Ostrom brought her family to Brooklyn to make their home.

In 1929 she was united in marriage to Carl Carlsen who preceded her in death six years ago.

Mrs. Carlsen has been in failing health for the past five years and passed away in Montezuma, Iowa May 18, 1957.

Besides her three children she is survived by seven step-children, Ray and Earl Ostrom, Harold, George and Leslie Carlsen, Mrs. Hazel Byers and Mrs. Ed Behounek. There are sixeen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; two brothers, Forrest and Glenn Doty, and four sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Roudabush, Mrs. Ed Severe, Mrs. Mark Johnston all of Brooklyn, and Charles Hutchins of Des Moines. Besides these there are many other relatives and wide circle of friends.
