MORRIS HAY SERVICES HELD

The Rev. Morris W. Hay, 85, of Newton, formerly of the Rock Creek area, died Monday, March 3, at Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Everett Carroll of the Bethel Mission in Des Moines and the Rev. Oscar Shepherd of the Foursquare Church in Newton officiating. Organist was Donna Wilson, and soloists were the Rev. Nolan Kelsey and Arthur and Evelyn Osborn.

Pallbearers were Craig Cooley, Kip, Mark, Marty, Todd and Troy Hay, Rick Huff and Curt Waters. Honorary bearers were Harold Buck, Kenneth Elliott, Delmar Grosvenor, Sherman Reichelt, Roy Herbold, Rinehart Schweinebart, Luverne Smith and Leslie Wertz. Burial was in Newton Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Hickory Grove Church.

The son of John Clayton and Rose Barker Hay, he was born on March 11, 1900, north of Mingo.

He operated the R&H Riding Academy of Grinnell. On Dec. 25, 1923, he was married to Margaret Stevens in Grinnell. The couple farmed near Brooklyn, Malcom and Grinnell. In the early 1930s, Mr. Hay worked for the Maplehurst Ice Cream and Creamery plant in Grinnell. Later, the couple farmed in the Rock Creek community for nine years and northwest of Kellogg for 38 years. They had lived in Newton since 1976.

The Rev. Mr. Hay began his ministerial career in 1959 at the Ashton Chapel near Newton. Since 1962 he had served the Hickory Grove Church west of Newburg and had also conducted services at the Jasper County Care Facility for a number of years. He formerly served on the board of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Kellogg.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; his children, June Hay of Newton, Patricia Huff of Newton, Nadine Cooley of Cedar Rapids, Bill Hay of Albert Lea, Minn., and Steve Hay of Sully; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Opal Millgate of Marshalltown and Irene Briggs of Escondido, Calif.; and one brother, John Hay of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
