ROBERT S. SHADDEN

Robert S. Shadden, 76, of Zapata, Texas, formerly of the Grinnell area, died Jan. 12, 2007, in Zapata.

He was born April 4, 1930, in Grinnell, the son of David and Vertie M. Wright Shadden. He attended school in Tama County, then enlisted in the United States Air Force. After boot camp in Wichita Falls, Texas, he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, where he worked in a motor pool during the Korean Conflict. He later was transferred to Weisbaden, Germany where he met his wife Alraune G. "Kitty" Schneider. They were married Oct. 4, 1950. He concluded his air force service in Great Falls, Mont., after which the couple moved to Gilman where he worked on the farm of his brother-in-law. They later moved to Tama where he worked in a machine shop and drove a truck for Hornback and Warren Transport. In 1988 they moved to Zapata, Texas. He was a member of the American Legion for over 55 years, the last 18 years as a member of the Zapata unit.

He is survived by his wife Kitty, one daughter Elizabeth Shadden Manatt, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother.
