Darla Smith Rites Friday

Darla Kay Smith, 15, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton A. Smith of Rte. 3, Grinnell, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Grinnell General Hospital. She had been seriously ill the past six months.

She was born in Grinnell on Sept. 14, 1959, and was a member of the sophomore class at Grinnell High School. While in junior high, she played trumpet in the marching band and stage band. She was a cheerleader and a member of the junior high girls basketball team. She was also a member of the Madison Church of Christ and the C.Y.H. youth group, and she sang in the church choir and was a member of the gospel team. She was active in the Chester Stars 4-H Club and had attained the seventh degree in the Sonora Grange. She was a charter member of the Sonora Junior Grange.

Miss Smith is survived by her parents; a sister, Denise; three brothers, Daniel, Dean and Donald; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ola Gildersleeve of Grinnell; and her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Dorothy Smith of Rte. 2, Brooklyn. She was preceeded in death by her grandfather, William A. Smith.

Funeral services for Darla Smith will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, at the Madison Church of Christ northwest of Brooklyn, with Charles Evans, minister of the church, and Charles Gorsch, minister of the Fort Des Moines Church of Christ, officiating. Music will be provided by Mrs. Ronald Read, organist; Mrs. Jack Lang, pianist; and Norman Egil, cornetist. Pallbearers will be Robert Birkenholz, Wayne Birkenholz, Jim DePauw, John DePauw, Randy Guildersleeve, and Kenneth Smith. Flower bearers will be Mr. and Mrs. Herb Kleiss and Mr. and Mrs. Gus DeLoof.

Burial will be in Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Madison Church of Christ.
