HIBBARD SUTHERLAND

Gilman Dispatch: Hibbard Sutherland was born in Bath, New Hampshire, March 12, 1835, and died at his home in Gilman May 9, 1917, aged 82 years and two months.

He was a pioneer of the state of Iowa, coming to Grinnell in the year 1855. In his youth he was interested in adventure and the opening of pioneer lands. In 1853 he went to the new country of California, traveling via Panama. In 1859 he went overland with an ox train to Colorado and returned to Grinnell in 1862. He settled on a farm one-half mile south of the village of Gilman. When the Iowa Central railway was built through Marshall county, Hibbard Sutherland and his father, David, gave right-of-way through their farm and a sum of money to help secure a townsite.

In 1872 he stocked a hardware store with the late J.B. Pence of Marshalltown, and the firm of Sutherland and Pence was known in Gilman for twenty-five years. In 1897 this partnership was dissolved and Mr. Sutherland carried on the business alone until his failing health began in the fall of 1916.

Mr. Sutherland is survived by his widow and three children--Mrs. G.P. Wyckoff of Grinnell, Ray Sutherland of Gilman, and Miss Marjorie Sutherland. A brother, Geo. Sutherland, lives in Beatrice, Neb., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Kelsey and Mrs. Eliza Schuyler, in Berkeley, Cal.

Mr. Sutherland was one of Gilman's pioneer residents and business men, and has been associated with the social and commercial life of the town since its establishment. He was esteemed and honored by all classes of people and everybody will remember him as a good citizen whose private and public life was above criticism and worthy of exemplification.

The funeral was held in Gilman yesterday afternoon and quite a delegation of Grinnell people went from here to attend the service. Those who went from here were Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Morrison, Mrs. Mary Sutherland, David Sutherland, Misses Eleanor and Mary Morrison, Frederic Morrison, Mrs. P.E. Somers, Mrs. E.A. Wadsworth and Professor J.D. Stoops. Prof. and Mrs. G.P. Wyckoff were already there and another daughter, Miss Marjorie Sutherland, a Grinnell graduate and a former teacher here, came from Bloomington, Ill., to attend the funeral.
