MRS. WYCKOFF DIES AT MANOR

Mrs. Florence Anna Wyckoff, 95, of Grinnell, the widow of Dr. Garrett P. Wyckoff, died Wednesday afternoon at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Wyckoff was the daughter of Hibbard and Ara Rogers Sutherland and the granddaughter of David Sutherland, a native of Bath, N.H., who came to Grinnell in 1855.

The family home, located on the present site of the U.S. Post Office, was built of dressed lumber brought with ox teams from Iowa City. In 1895 it was still a sturdy structure and moved to another part of town. Hibbard and his father bought land from the U.S. Government at $2.00 an acre one-half mile south of Gilman. When the Iowa Central railroad was built through Marshall County, they gave right of way through their farm and a sum of money to help secure the townsite.

Florence Wyckoff was born Nov. 19, 1872, at Gilman, and following her education in the local schools, she attended Highland Park University in Des Moines, graduating with the class of 1892. She taught in Highland Park University and later at Buena Vista College.

On June 19, 1899, at Gilman, she was united in marriage with Garrett Polhemus Wyckoff, and they resided in Grinnell for many years where he had served as acting professor of Applied Christianity from 1899 to 1903, and as acting professor of political science for 1903 to 1904 and in 1904 was appointed professor of economics.

From 1921 to 1937, Dr. and Mrs. Wyckoff resided in New Orleans where her husband was professor of sociology at Tulane University. They then returned to Grinnell where he retired in 1941. Dr. Wyckoff preceded her in death on October 31, 1951. Survivors include her sister--Mrs. Marjorie Wheeler of Berkley, Calif., five nieces and two nephews--Miss Gretta Smith of Chula Vista, Calif., Mrs. Carol Dickson of Boulder, Colo., Mrs. Virginia Clark of Iowa City, Mrs. Helen Hansen of Alta, Iowa, Miss Margaret Sutherland of New York City, Hibbard Sutherland of Berkely, Calif., and Jack Sutherland of Gilman, Iowa. Mrs. Wyckof was a member of the Grinnell United Church of Christ.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Wyckoff will be held 3:30 p.m., Saturday afternoon at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Beebe, of the Mayflower Home, officiating. Organist will be Mr. Norman Goodbrod. Later, ashes will be interred with her husband's at Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman.
