NAOMI GROPPER

Naomi Louise Gropper, 70, of the Jasper County Care facility, a former Grinnell-area resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with the Rev. Jerry Brown of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, officiating. Organist was Margaret Wheeler, and vocalist was Verle Kooistra. Pallbearers were Richard Arduser, Richard Bollinger, Gene Martinson, Gene McCurry, Cliff Meyer Jr. and Gary Meyer.

Burial was in Sheridan Cemetery.

The daughter of Henry and Mary Blanche Haynes Meyer, she was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Sheridan Township. She attended rural school. Following her education she worked for several businesses, and during World War II she worked for the Grinnell Shoe Factory.

She was married to Wayne Gropper Jan. 16, 1946, in Grinnell. The couple farmed east of Grinnell. Following their divorce she moved to Cedar Rapids in 1970 where she was employed in the accounting department of the Nash-Finch Co. She retired in 1986 and moved to Newton in 1987. Mrs. Gropper had been a resident of the Jasper County Care Facility since suffering a stroke in 1989.

She was a member of the Malcom Presbyterian Church and served as secretary of her bowling league.

Surviving are her children, Mary Johnson of Harlan and Marilyn Gropper of St. Augustine, Fla.; one granddaughter; two brothers, Clifton Meyer Sr. and Wesley Meyer, both of Grinnell; and three sisters, Beatrice Ingraham of Laurel, Maxine Crossett of Hampton, Va., and Helen Hall of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lyle and Allan Meyer; and a sister, Eva Young.
