BYARD BRALEY SERVICES HELD

Byard C. Braley, 54, of Brooklyn was dead on arrival Wednesday, March 11, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services for Mr. Braley were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First United Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, with the Rev. Lynn Williams officiating. Pallbearers were Ed Wells, Jack Hall, Francis Creps, Willis Montgomery, Dean Montgomery, and Kenneth Richman.

Military rites were conducted by members of Francis Gallagher American Legion Post No. 294, with burial at the Ewart Cemetery. The Nevenhoven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The son of Annette and Clifford Braley, he was born April 29, 1926, near Ewart. He grew up on a farm in Pleasant Township and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1943. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and saw action on Iwo Jima in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged in 1946 and farmed briefly with his brother Gordon.

On June 29, 1952, he was married to Marcia Sherwood. Mr. Braley managed Johnson Feed and Grain for several years after moving to Brooklyn. In 1960, he began selling insurance, which he continued to do until his death. He was also a partner and manager in Hartwick Feed and Grain.

Mr. Braley was an elder in the First United Presbyterian Church and was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. He served on both the Brooklyn Town Council and the Poweshiek County Mental Health Board.

Survivors include his wife; his children, Brad Braley of Ida Grove, Brenda Wright of Brooklyn, Bruce Braley of Iowa City and Brian Braley of Brooklyn; one grandchild; three brothers, Frank of Grinnell, Bert of Olney, Md., and Gordon of Grinnell;; and one sister, Mary Lou Staubus of Indianola.
