JOHN C. BOPE OF HARTWICK DIES

John C. Bope was born in Jefferson township, Poweshiek county, Iowa, Dec. 2, 1879, and passed away at his home near Hartwick, Iowa, on April 19, 1929, at the age of 49 years, 4 months and 17 days.

He was united in marriage with Bertha N. Lyman on Dec. 4, 1902. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Bope began housekeeping in Hartwick, then moved to the farm northeast of Hartwick now occupied by Charles Ostrom. From thence they moved to the farm northwest of Hartwick now occupied by Charles Iezek, later removing to the town of Hartwick, where Mr. Bope built and conducted a restaurant. After occupying the house in Hartwick for some time, now owned and occupied by Mr. Bope's father, John Bope Sr., the son and his family moved to the farm east of Hartwick, where they continued to reside up to the time of Mr. Bope's death.

Mr. Bope always took a keen interest in civic affairs and served the community at different times in various official capacities. He took a very active part in the organization of the Hartwick Consolidated School District and served as presidnt of the school board for a number of years. He held the office of township clerk for several terms, and was still holding that office at the time of his death.

Mr. and Mrs. Bope became the parents of eight children: Norman L. of Hafla, Iowa, Mrs. George Ostrom, Orville, Evelyn, Violet, Kenneth, Maxine and Jane, all of Hartwick, and all of whom, with their widowed mother, survive to mourn the loss of the deceased. Mr. Bope is also survived by his aged father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Bope, Sr., of Hartwick, and by a half-brother and half-sister, Arthur Bope and Mrs. Florence Barber, both of Long Beach, Calif. His mother, three brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held in the Hartwick Congregational church on Monday, April 22, 1929, at 2 p.m. Rev. Byron W. Northrop officiated and interment was made in the Hartwick cemetery.
