SAMUEL BURNSIDE

There was general regret in the city when it was learned that Samuel Burnside had died last Tuesday morning about 5 o'clock, after an illness of but a few hours. He was stricken Monday with hemorrhage of the stomach, and died at 5 o'clock Tuesday morning.

Mr. Burnside was born near Lexington, Ind., January 28, 1846, while his parents were on a visit there. His early life was spent at Blue Grass, Ia., at one time a community with a promising future, from which locality have come many of Grinnell's best people.

On November 25, 1868, he was united in marriage with Laura Cessna, who preceded him in death on November 10, 1912.

In 1868 Mr. Burnside moved to Grinnell and located on a farm just north of town. Here the family lived until 1900, when they moved to town, purchasing the home where both Mr. and Mrs. Burnside died. Five children were born to them, two of whom are living, Mrs. Jay Swaney of Grinnell and Clifton Burnside of Des Moines. Two sisters survive him, Mrs. C.J. Barr and Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson of Davenport.

Two children, Nellie Lenora and Samuel Leroy died in infancy and Clinton, a bright and strong young man, in 1906.

Mr. Burnside inherited the hardy virtues of his pioneer parents, who came to Iowa in 1836, and roughed it as residents of the early days were compelled to do. He was alwalys willing and ready to lend a helping hand, and many friends know that not only was the heart willing, but the flesh was strong.

Mr. Burnside united with the M.E. church at the age of 21, at Blue Grass, and worshipped in an edifice he had helped to build.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by W.P. Stoddard, D.D. A large concourse of friends gathered to do homage to the honored dead. Songs were sung by Mrs. Black and Mrs. Dempster. Bearers were T.H. Buchanan, C.E. Edelblute, F.C. Donahue, Wm. Vogt, Alex Fraser and Geo. Murray.

Relatives from out of town to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Barr, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barr, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson and Mrs. George Meyers of Davenport, Iowa; Mrs. Elwood Chamblis, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Johnson, Mrs. Will Barns and Mr. Warren Burnside, of Blue Grass; Mrs. Harry Stanton and Mrs. Lizzie Adamson, of Newton; and Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Burnside, of Des Moines.
