GLADYS BUFFUM

Gladys Buffum, 74, of 934 East St. in Grinnell died Friday, May 3 at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown.

Funeral services were set for 11 a.m. Monday, May 6 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with the Rev. Cliff Bevins, pastor of the First Baptist church of Grinnell, officiating. Organist was Sue Martindale.

Pallbearers were Gordon Felper, Wayne Gropper, Arthur Grosenbach, Kevin Hobbs, Mike Hotchkin, Wes Meyer, Kenneth L. Saunders and Richard Zobel. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Cooper and Edna Guffey Slagle, she was born July 5, 1916 in Wayne County, Ky. She moved to Grinnell with her family in the late 1920's and graduated from Grinnell High School.

She married Joseph W. Buffum in Tipton, Iowa, on Dec. 25, 1936. The couple lived in Grinnell where they operated the Colonial Oil Station from 1939 to 1943, the White Spot Cafe from 1943 to 1958, and the Bowladrome from 1958 to 1983.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Grinnell Coin Club. She was active in women's bowling leagues in the Grinnell area.

She is survived by two sons, Gary W. Buffum of Pittsfield, Mass., and James W. Buffum of Grinnell; three daughters, Sue Buffum, Linda Kingsley and Becky Buffum, all of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel Peters of Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Betty Jo Buffum; and a brother, Herbert Slagle.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Grinnell.
