LUCILE H. FRITZ

Lucile H. Fritz, 87, of the Mayflower Home died of Alzheimer's disease Saturday, May 16, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Raymond C. Lott officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and vocalist was Marvin Kelley.

Pallbearers were Mike Ashby, Gary E. Beyer, Harold Churchill, Melvin Dunsbergen, Rodney Van Maanen and Larry Kooistra. Honorary bearers were Robert Ashby, Paul Beyer, John DeJong and Bernard Kooistra. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery southwest of Grinnell.

Memorials in Mrs. Fritz's name may be made to the Bethel Church Restoration Fund.

The daughter of Charles Westley and Ida Lavender Hays, she was born Feb. 7, 1905, on the family farm north of Grinnell. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1923 and from Grinnell College in 1927 with a major in music. She was a pianist in the Grinnell College Orchestra. She taught music in the Traer, Lynnville-Sully and Grinnell-Newburg school systems.

She was married to Lehrl Fritz July 14, 1929, and the couple farmed in the Bethel area southwest of Grinnell. She moved to the Mayflower Home in 1986.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the former Bethel United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and was active in the W.S.C.S. She also was a member of the Grinnell Chapter of the DAR, PEO Chapter BM of Grinnell and the Tuesday Club. She helped found the PEO chapter in Valdosta, Ga., and was active in the Jasper County Fair and 4-H. She was former director of the Jasper County Women's Chorus and sang in the Bethel Quartet.

Surviving are two sons, Charles of Kellogg and Steven of Marshalltown; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one daughter, Joanne Merritt.
