OBITUARY OF MRS. EMELINE E. JAMES

Emeline E. James, nee Knight was born near Hanover, New Hampshire, March 17, 1851. Her parents were Elizabeth W. and Edwin Perry Knight. Her father died when she was a young girl and her mother carried on the farm for several years. Later she removed with her children to Bloomington, Ill., where they conducted a hotel.

After the death of the mother the daughter, later known to us as Mrs. James, returned to New Hampshire and lived several years in Laconia of that state. She was united in marriage with George E. James at Hodgman, Kansas, July 24, 1880.

It was a day valuable to Grinnell when Mr. and Mrs. James became residents. Mr. James was in charge of a store that was owned by a company for several years, and he finally became the owner of the business. Mrs. James was a kind and helpful neighbor, and a true friend in home and neighborhood.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and Grinnell Chapter of the D.A.R. At the time of her death she was a member of the Laconia, N.H. Unitarian church. During the last few years she has made her home with her brother, William F. Knight, who is one of the prominent men of Laconia. Her daughter, Helen, has been with her much of the time in Laconia. She leaves another daughter, Mrs. Mildred Clindinin, who is a resident of Grinnell.

Mrs. Emeline E. James passed away Feb. 10, 1934.

Funeral services were held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. F.F. Clindinin Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robert Inglis. Burial was in Hazelwood. Pallbearers were R.B. Work, Paul Meyers, Paul Sloan, R.E. Bates, Carl E. Child and Professor L.P. Sherman.
