ROY HOUVENAGLE

Roy J. Houvenagle was born January, 23, 1887 in Muscatine County, Iowa, and passed away March 12 at the age of 53 years. He was the son of Louis and Fatima Houvenagle. With his parents when 3 years of age, he came to a farm southeast of Grinnell. On December 6, 1911, he was united in marriage Ellen E. Bruce of Grinnell, where they have lived continuously with the exception of 4 years spent in Gilman. Roy was a devoted husband and loved his home. He was a member of the I.O.O.F., Rebekah and B.P.O.E. lodges. For a number of years he was very active in lodge work, serving as Noble Grand of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in 1935. He was always interested in his neighbor's welfare, and ever generous in his help to those who needed him. His warm smile and friendly greetings will be missed by a multitude of friends and acquaintances.

Surviving him are his widow, Ellen and his mother, Mrs. Fatima Houvenagle, besides numerous other relatives. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Chas. R. Rowe, assisted by Mrs. Rowe at the organ, were held at 2:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church. Pall bearers were Chas. Kimball, Jack Walker, Jas. McNally, Homer Talbert, Chas. LeRoy and John Jantzen, brother Odd Fellows. Mrs. Jane Skidmore and Mrs. W.C. French, sister Rebekahs, carried the flowers. The Elks had charge of the services at the grave. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Reiss of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Reiss of Melbourne, Mr. and Mrs. Max Paxton of Marshalltown, Helen Reiss of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. E.I. Bruce of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Bruce, of Des Moines, Walter Bruce of Des Moines, Glenn E. Bruce of Des Moines, Mrs. Ruth Geogle of Colfax, Mrs. Herbert Kline of Colfax, Mrs. Elmer Bell of Colfax, Lee and Ralph Bruce of Colfax, Mrs. Frank Poeka and daughter, Neta, of Toledo, Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Hunsbenger and sons, Bruce and Warren of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Moore of Gilman.
