A PIONEER'S FUNERAL

Old Timer in Washington Twp. Laid To Rest in Hazelwood Cemetery

PETER NOAH SERVED IN 156TH ILL. INFANTRY

Was a Useful Citizen and Christian Who Served His Generation Well

The funeral of Peter Noah, pioneer settler of Washington twp. was held at the Friends Church Saturday morning at ten o'clock conducted by an old time friend, Rev. Robert C. Lincoln. Many old time acquaintances and friends gathered to pay their respects to the memory of a man who in his prime did good service for Christian living. Mr. Lincoln took for his text a passage from Ecclesiastes: "Because Man goeth to his everlasting home" and wove into his discourse a beautiful tribute to a friend and an exhortation on right living.

Music was by G.W. Richards and Miss Rachel Richards with Mrs. Richards at the piano. Bearers were old time soldier comrades, H.A. Field, T.J. Noll, Wm. Bortell, J. Wisecarver, Henry Bray, W.C. Williams.

Burial was in Hazelwood by the body of his wife who died a quarter of a century ago.

Peter Noah was born in Ohio, Jan. 22, 1832, and died Feb. 11, 1921 at Marshalltown, aged 89 years and 20 days. In 1855 he came west to Rock Island County, Ill., where he was married in 1856 to Mary Ann Sturdivan. Both then united with the United Brethren church.

To this marriage four children were born, Emily, now Mrs. E.E. Utley of Glenwood, Minn., M.M. Noah, now of Spencer, Iowa, J.S. Noah, of Lynnville, and E.W. Noah of Des Moines, all living, the three sons being present at the funeral, as was also the son-in-law.

Mr. Noah answered the call of his country by enlisting in the 156th Illinois Infantry, serving till the end of the war.

In 1866 he came to this county settling in Washington twp. on a farm where he lived until 1886 when he moved to Grinnell. Since the death of Mrs. Noah he has lived either with his son Ed or at the Soldiers Home. He always claimed Grinnell as his home and was a faithful voter in the ranks at each election as he had been a soldier.

Mr. Noah leaves many friends who knew him and liked him in his strength and who mourn his departure to another land.
