GROSS SERVICES ON SEPT. 4

Funeral services for Mrs. Jess E. Gross were held Saturday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at Grinnell United Methodist Church. The Rev. J. Eugene Young officiated.

Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Serving on the flower committee were Mr. and Mrs. Warren Ryan and Mr. and Mrs. Grinnell Dunham. Pallbearers were Rodney Brown, James Brown, Timothy Stanley, and Roland, Ronald and David Gross.

Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Arrangements were by the James-Schalinske Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gross, aged 88 at the time of her death on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Grinnell General Hospital, was born at Hubbard on Jan. 1, 1888, the daughter of Charles and Honora Burdick. She received her education in the Hubbard schools until she was sixteen, when, upon the death of her parents, she moved to Searsboro. She graduated from Searsboro High School.

She was married on Aug. 20, 1905, to Jess E. Gross at Oskaloosa. Following their marriage they farmed in Searsboro until 1918 when they moved to their farm north of Grinnell. She lived in their farm home on Penrose Street for 53 years, up to the time of the brief illness which preceded her death. Her husband died in 1953, and one son, Clarence, died in 1952.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and Circle Five. Survivors include her son, Cloyd P., of the Sheridan community; two daughters, Mrs. Ellis (Ruth) Brown, Grinnell, and Mrs. Elaine Stanley, Montezuma; 13 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and son, she was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and one brother.
