GEORGE TERRY

George Terry, who died of the infirmities of age at his home in Marshalltown, October 16, was born in Cogshell, England, in October, 1829. About 1850 he came to this country and was early engaged in business at St. Louis. In 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Whittaker and shortly after the war, in which he served his Union well, they moved to Grinnell.

Here he was a trusted employe at the Carver, Steele & Austin header-works in the capacity of bookkeeper. In the cyclone of 1882 the home was destroyed and the youngest child killed. The next spring the family went to England but soon returned to Grinnell and then later went to Marshalltown where he spent the remainder of his days and where for seventeen years he was bookkeeper, being employed part of the time in the Ketchum Buggy Co.'s works and part of the time at the Times-Republican office.

Funeral services were held at Marshalltown Friday and the body brought here for interment in the family lot, by the side of three of his children. Four children and his wife survive him. They are Mrs. Annette Law of Great Falls, Mont., Thos. A. Terry of Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Belle Rogers of Minneapolis, and Geo. W. Terry of Minneapolis. The last two and their mother accompanied the remains here. Brief services were conducted at the grave by the Rev. W.P. James, Episcopal minister at Marshalltown. The services were also attended by the Gordon Granger Post, G.A.R., and many old friends of the family.
