BEULAH N. ALTEMEIER

Beulah N. Altemeier, 98, of Grinnell died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, July 18, at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers were Kevin, Steven, Stanley, Christopher, Todd, Shawn and Chad Altemeier, Ryan and Robb Craddock; Scott, Troy and Shane Gosselink, and Lance Sherlock. Flower bearers were Cindy Atkin, Nancy Sue Evans, Cathy Gilliland, Bonnie Lou Taylor, Tammy Beebe, Cheryl Nolin, Tonya Harklau, Lori Oltrogge, Lisa Moyer, Sonja Lucas, Jill Stufflebeam and Tara Warren. Burial was in Chester Cemetery, rural Grinnell. Memorials may be made to the Beulah Altemeier Memorial Fund. On-line condolences may be submitted to the family on the Smith Funeral Home website.

She was born Sept. 29, 1908, in Newton, the daughter of Andrew and Minnie Petersen Andersen. She was raised in the Newton area and graduated from Kellogg High School. On Nov. 15, 1930, she was married to Morris Altemeier in Bethany, Mo. The couple farmed north of Newton, then moved to a farm near Newburg in 1941. She had been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 2003.

She was a member of the Newburg Church. She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens, and canning her produce. She also enjoyed following her grandchildren in all their activities, cooking and collecting salt and pepper shakers.

She is survived by her children, Earl Altemeier of Brooklyn, Leo Altemeier of Malcom, Clyde Altemeier of Milan, Ill., Jan Sherlock of Grinnell, Doyle "Butch" Altemeier of Gilman, Karen Henderson of Macomb, Ill., and LaVonne Gosselink of Grinnell; 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Morris in 1994; one son Dwane Altemeier; one grandson Steven Mercer; four brothers, Carl, Fred, Ralph and Clarence Andersen and three sisters, Martha Morrison, Hannah Banghart and Gertrude Keenan.
