EDWARD BUTCHER
Edward E. Butcher, 62, of 1517 Summer St., Grinnell, died of a heart ailment and complications from diabetes Wednesday, July 1, at his home.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers were Max Allen, Jerry Barns, Darrel Lamb, James Ahrens, Jim Haines, David Thompson and Larry Wray. Honorary bearers were members of the Grinnell Volunteer Fire Department.
Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
The son of Walter F. and Erma Stewart Butcher, he was born Oct. 25, 1929, in Big Spring, Texas. He and his family moved to San Diego, Calif., where he graduated from high school.
He was married to Naomi Badger Jan. 20, 1951, in Yuma, Ariz. Following their marriage they moved to Grinnell.
For 17 years, Mr. Butcher was a driver for the Grinnell Fire Department. He later served as a parts man for Onthank Body and Fender, retiring in 1991 due to disability. For over 30 years he had delivered the Des Moines Sunday Register in rural Grinnell.
Surviving are his wife, Naomi; two sons, Philip of Durham, N.C., and Stephen of Grinnell; one daughter, Cynthia Roovaart of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Charles of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Phillip of Cardiff, Calif., Raymond of Alpine, Calif., and Walter of La Mesa, Calif.; and two sisters, Mary Adam of Ramona, Calif., and Nancy Ryman of San Diego; and his parents.
