LELA COOP

Lela M. Coop, 94, of Grinnell died Friday, Aug. 9, at Friendship Manor.

Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Casket bearers will be Bill McCrea, Ken McGhghy, Sean Pertzborn, Chuck Polke, Jack Templeton and Ray Ziegenmeyer. Honorary bearers will be Ellis Brown, Allen Latcham, Tyler McGhghy, Paul Strovers, Noel Taylor and Lyle Wiley. Fraternal rites will be conducted by members of the Order of Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

She was the daughter of Henry and Lida McElroy Leibrock and was born Aug. 7, 1908, in Chicago. The family moved to Gilman where she graduated from high school. She attended the school of nursing at the former Community Hospital in Grinnell and was a 1932 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Nursing.

She was married to George D. Coop Nov. 21, 1932, in Peoria, Ill. They lived in Grinnell where she worked as a nurse at the former St. Francis and Community hospitals. She was school nurse for the Grinnell-Newburg School District for 22 years.

She was a member of the White Nazareth Shrine of Newton, the Order of Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge of Grinnell. She was past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge, past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star and musician for the White Shrine. She was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Taylor of Pinetop, Ariz., and Dora Ullrich of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one grandson.

Memorials may b directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or the Adult Day Care Center.
