SHIRLEY O. DALE

Shirley O. Dale, 82, of Grinnell died Friday, Sept. 24, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organist will be Alice Renaud.

Casket bearers will be Dave Abarr, Kevin Hobbs, Alan Latcham, Walt Harris, Todd Hobbs and Marlon Olson. Honorary bearers will be Bill Dean, Casey Kelso, Howard Neighbors, Carroll "Buzz" Dean, Cody Kelso, Don Pederson, Garrett Dean, Floyd Lacina and Pete Peterson.

Graveside rites will be conductd by members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.

He was born June 10, 1917, in Northwood and was the son of John and Grace Black Dale. He was raised and educated in Orient, graduating from Orient High School.

On Sept 1, 1941, he was married to Betty L. Garrett in Nevada, and the couple lived in Grinnell. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Dale owned and operated Dale's Locker plant for 10 years and managed the DX bulk plant for awhile before becoming a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He held the postal position for 30 years until his retirement.

He was a member of the Retired Mail Carriers Association, the Disabled Veterans Association and the Grinnell American Legion. He was past master of the Chester Royal Grange. He served as past president of the Grinnell Saddle Club and Grinnell High School music booster organizations, as well as the Grant Better Livestock 4-H Club.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Diana Parson of Indianola, Patty Fennelly of Davenport and Carol Wine of Durango, Colo.; one son, John of Des Moines; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Heart Association, the Chester Royal Grange or Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
